A nice and fine salinity at the end of the mouth. On the palate this wine expresses notes of creamy raspberry, fleshy strawberry and more slightly blueberry combined with touches of liquorice, crushed blackcurrant, fine hints of cocoa bean, sweet blond tobacco, a subtle hint of vanilla cream as well as a very discreet hint of saffron (in the background) and sweet spices. Richness/power with delicacy and control. The palate is fruity and offers accuracy, minerality, good definition, a mineral backbone, some well-managed richness, a very discreetly tight material, precision, neatness and a fine airy side in the approach. There are notes of liquorice, fresh violet and more slightly graphite combined with delicate mineral touches, fine points of black tea, sap as well as a subtle hint of spice, Sichuan pepper, a discreet touch of saffron, cardamom and an imperceptible hint of clove/incense. A regular winner of our blind tastings and a classic of the appellation. The nose is aromatic and offers power/force in delicacy, mastery, depth as well as a certain intensity in finesse/ripeness. Two second labels are now produced - Les Griffons (from the younger vines) and Les Tourelles de Longueville (from a specific parcel of mostly Merlot vines). Latour-like in style, Pichon Baron has been a star performer in our recent blind vintage tastings. The grand vin is now made only from fruit produced in the original vineyard that is opposite Latour and next to Lascases. The vineyard is planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. In recent years, under the ownership of AXA insurance, Englishman Christian Seely has been in charge and quality continues to rise. This great 73 hectare vineyard has been producing top class Pauillac since the late 1980's when Jean-Michel Cazes of Lynch Bages took control and re-vitalised the property.
